As a godly woman, the way you carry yourself truly matters. People are watching whether they tell you or not. The things you post on social media, along with the encounters you have with others, matter in any setting. Remember, you are here for a reason with a wonderful purpose to be a light to others—not perfection, but a genuine light.
As a stylist for two decades, I have had the opportunity to make a positive impact in multiple ways, from hairstyling, fixing a hair problem, assisting with wardrobes for self-image, being a vendor, to teaching a workshop or certification class. The gift and passion for helping others feel great about themselves have fueled my energy.
I often think back to my teenage years when I had the opportunity to style my grandmother. She would ask me to grease her scalp, and I enjoyed the smile it put on her face. It made me happy to see my grandmother smile while I pampered her hair and scratched her scalp. Those moments were the seeds that helped me become the master stylist I am today.
I am truly thankful to have a safe place to help others share burdens or life challenges. I am thankful for having an inviting salon space to serve clients and help them appreciate natural beauty from the inside out. In my salon, I work by appointment only and take one client at a time. I am careful not to overbook.
My current clients tell me countless times that they appreciate this gesture, and during their self-care session, they truly feel special. I am intentional about playing uplifting music in the background and using natural essential oils with a calming aroma in the atmosphere. It is truly a blessing to watch my clients sleep during their steam sessions. It is an honor to provide a service that helps women love themselves. This was truly a dream, and now I have the chance to walk in that dream as I serve my community.
When clients feel comfortable in the salon, they openly discuss their experiences and challenges with natural haircare. Many clients did not embrace their natural hair during childhood, making it a new experience as teenagers or young adults. I ensure to use patience and understanding without judgment to support them throughout this process.
The first tool I enjoy is the client consultation. This tool helps me find out information about the hair history of my client, the fears and joys they have around natural hair, along with their life and personal goals so I can best support them as a stylist.
The client consultation allows me to build rapport by meeting clients where they are and guiding them towards their goals. Empathy and understanding are crucial, as clients value genuine authenticity and shared experiences. Incorporating images during the styling process is beneficial, as it enhances confidence and positively influences the overall environment.
My approach is centered around the client, ensuring that their needs are paramount. I ask numerous questions to understand their preferences and daily lifestyle. Based on this information, I then provide recommendations for the most suitable style, products, and hair treatment plan.
In turn, my clients leave with an understanding of what to expect and a clear goal, even if they want to learn how to style themselves. They have a foundation to build upon, and that helps them feel valued, safe, and secure in the salon space.
