You must take the time to gently detangle your hair in sections from ends to roots with a little leave conditioner and water to gently soften the hair strands prior to shampooing. This is vital to length retention and excessive shedding!
Keep in mind that natural hair is more flexible when wet and most vulnerable.
Water serves as the best source of moisture for natural hair.
